A DME store or Durable Medical Equipment store, sells products that help individuals “age in place” safely. Usually mobility aids and bathroom safety supplies, but can also include hospital beds and equipment, compression stockings, cushions, wound care products, breathing aids and treatment accessories, and adult incontinence products.
Mobility products on hand will include; walkers, rollators, wheelchairs and transport chairs. Electric products such as mobility scooters and wheelchairs. Accessories will include cushions, leg rest options, and types of walkers bags and baskets. The staff should be versed in types of mobility for different needs, making adjustments for the users heights, adjusting brakes and making repairs to keep equipment in safe working order.
Bathroom safety products will be mainly focused on making the bath area safe and easy to use. Raised toilet seats, safety frames and padded seats are a common addition which usually don’t require tools. In the tub/shower area, bath benches and transfer benches will keep the user safe from slip and falls. Anti slip surfaces and mats are also an easy addition for safety. Grab bars come with suction cups for balance, or can be professionally installed for users who need to use them for weight bearing.
There are many products out there for individuals with different needs. If you are unsure of the type of products you or your loved one needs, give us a call for all your DME questions.
Thank you.
